The film centers on Dean, a comic artist and writer grappling with his relationship with his father—a man he struggles to connect with—as well as their mutual sorrow over the death of his mother, all while navigating a budding romance. While the story follows a predictable path and includes some familiar character types, such as Nicky, the romantic interest, or the employees from the California company seeking to employ Dean, it manages to be worthwhile due to its genuine emotional core. The acting choices were well-made; Martin embodies Dean convincingly, Jacobs is believable as Nicky, and Kline portrays Robert (the father) in a way that feels authentic to his persona.
