This movie is something I suggest to anyone who appreciates films and strong performances. It didn't get much attention when it first came out, which is disappointing because the acting is exceptionally refined and delicate, and the script has moments that are both touching and genuinely funny. The story takes place in Edwardian England, where we’re introduced to Fisk senior, an older man cared for by his son, Fisk Junior, and their housekeeper, Mrs. Brimley. Having distanced himself from the world, Fisk senior's son tries to keep him engaged with society, leading them to attend a lecture on reincarnation where they have a brief encounter with Dean Spanley. After another unexpected meeting, Fisk junior wants to spend more time with the withdrawn clergyman, but only if he can get his hands on a bottle of Imperial Tokaji. As I said, the acting is outstanding across the board; Northam portrays Fisk Junior’s quiet annoyance with his father well, and Brown delivers an “abrasive” Australian performance. However, Sam Neill and Peter O'Toole truly stand out – their performances, especially in close-ups, are often remarkable. Director Toa Fraser deserves a lot of credit for drawing such great work from the cast through his understated approach. The film’s opening can feel a little slow, but I think that was intentional to mirror Fisk senior's state of being; as we follow along with him, the story gradually unfolds and becomes more expansive. I strongly suggest seeing this movie, particularly if you decide to enjoy some Tokaji while watching it. 9/10.
