The "Deadpool" idea is completely integrated into the Marvel multi-verse now, and honestly, I worried about what this third installment would bring to the table. More of the same? Not exactly. Ryan Reynolds has returned to the occasionally crude humor that made the first film (2016) so enjoyable, letting this movie center on the character of this irreverent, immortal superhero as he attempts to revive the recently deceased "Wolverine/Logan" (Hugh Jackman), which is necessary to protect his timeline from being erased. To accomplish that and stop the comically threatening "Paradox" (Matthew Macfadyen), he has to confront "Cassandra Nova" (Emma Corrin) – who turns out to be the long-lost twin sister of “Xavier,” overseeing a desolate, void-like area. This is a desert landscape where those deemed undesirable have been exiled by "Paradox" and his organization. At first, there’s no warmth between these two heroes; the man in red lycra doesn't make a good impression on his new companion, who's struggling with alcohol and guilt. But they quickly find common ground, and then – well, you can probably figure out what happens next. There isn't anything surprising about any of it, but it does declare itself loudly and proudly, acknowledging that it knows exactly what it is. It’s not trying to come up with something new; instead, it’s pointing out that all these multi-verse movies that simply tweak the space/time continuum to give familiar stories and characters a fresh backdrop need to stop before we, as viewers, become even more tired of their repetitive fight sequences and unremarkable plots. Perhaps Reynolds pushes the vulgarity a bit too far at times, but there are still plenty of clever remarks about the industry, advertising, and all the films (and actors) that have come before delivering the same old thing. It also doesn't forget to entertain – there are numerous action scenes, and the two actors share a pleasant, equally sarcastic rapport throughout the two-hour runtime, which includes some amusing appearances by Evans, Snipes, Cavill, Favreau, and Tatum to keep things moving along with an energetic spirit. This is a must-see on the big screen; a lot of work went into the production, and it won’t translate as well on television, but I did enjoy it.
