It's disappointing how often moviemaking suffers from trying to reuse successful formulas, and this newest chapter in one of cinema’s better superhero series risks demonstrating that point. The earlier films (2016, 2018) really stood out from the usual superhero movies with their outrageous humor, funny visual jokes, and a consistently rebellious spirit. This time, though, director Shawn Levy's latest feels uneven, with a script that often doesn’t quite make sense—like it was thrown together from spare parts, some of which are effective while others aren’t. That’s probably not unexpected considering four different writers worked on the screenplay, and I can’t help but wonder how much agreement there was in putting it all together. The film seems designed to combine the Deadpool franchise with the X-Men universe, an interesting idea that, unfortunately, is handled rather awkwardly—as has frequently happened with other recent attempts at merging franchises within the Marvel Universe. And if that wasn't enough, this release gives very little attention to the supporting cast that made the Deadpool films so funny and original, reducing them mostly to brief appearances in favor of cameos by a bunch of other MCU characters (some pretty obscure ones, I noticed) apparently meant to strengthen this franchise crossover. It leads to some clumsy storytelling at times, particularly for viewers who aren’t familiar with these less well-known characters—some of whom come from Marvel comics that haven't been adapted for the big screen. On the positive side, Ryan Reynolds is excellent again as the irreverent lead character, and there are still plenty of genuinely funny moments (certainly a hallmark of this franchise), including several sharp comments about what’s happened behind the scenes with the studios involved and the actors who have appeared in them. Despite these strengths, however, it's clear that this film has diluted the qualities that made the franchise successful to prioritize an overarching strategy that doesn’t really benefit either the movie or the series. The creators would have been better off sticking to what worked and focusing on solid storytelling rather than pushing for future projects that might not succeed. This has been a problem with many of the latest Marvel Universe releases, and I'd be sad to see this franchise suffer a similar decline.
