Bogart, as “Ed,” gives an excellent performance in this story about a newspaper editor facing job uncertainty when his publication changes hands. As everyone looks for new opportunities, he attempts to inspire his colleagues to pursue an inquiry into local mob boss "Rienzi" following the death of one of their own. The film is sometimes slowed down by a somewhat awkward romantic subplot—his connection with his soon-to-be remarried former spouse, “Nora” (Kim Hunter)—but it primarily highlights how newspapers operated in post-war America: a raw, dedicated form of journalism grappling with organized crime, personal and familial concerns (ranging from harmless to harmful), corruption, and real danger, all striving to bring the news to New Yorkers each morning. Ethel Barrymore contributes a sense of refinement as the newspaper’s owner who starts questioning the sale's prudence while also becoming involved in the intense examination of a man who employs intimidation and legal maneuvering to stay ahead of law enforcement. It delivers a considerable impact throughout nearly its entire 90-minute length, effectively showcasing both the leading actor and the script at their finest.
