Those easily overwhelmed should avoid this one! Deadline at Dawn comes from director Harold Clurman, with Clifford Odets adapting Cornell Woolrich’s novel for the screenplay. The cast includes Susan Hayward, Paul Lukas, Bill Williams, Joseph Calleia, Osa Masson and Lola Lane. Hans Eisler composed the music, and Nicholas Musuraca was in charge of cinematography. Sailor Alex Winkley (Williams) finds himself with a pounding headache and no memory, plus a surprising amount of money in his pockets after a night of drinking. He asks dancer June Goth (Hayward) to help him figure out what happened the previous evening, eventually leading them back to the apartment of a nightclub hostess who had been friendly with him. When they discover the woman is dead, Alex isn't sure if he’s responsible for her death and robbery. With time running short, Alex and his friend must uncover the truth... "She's a blitzkrieg with hair on her head." The plot device of amnesia appears in many classic film noir movies, and here it arises from an everyday situation: a night of heavy drinking. This creates a mystery that unfolds as the main characters navigate a nighttime New York City setting filled with troubled or threatening individuals. The conversations are frequently clever, featuring memorable lines and thoughtful observations from Lukas’s taxi driver, who becomes involved in clearing Alex's name (and apparently all the cabbies in this movie are pretty great). This was Clurman’s sole directorial effort for a feature film, and it’s really just an adequate job; he benefits from strong performances by Hayward and Lukas. Still, there is a well-realized noir atmosphere, and the movie maintains its appeal throughout. 7/10
