A Thanksgiving getaway turns into something much more dangerous when a robbery leads to a killer and his sister scattering across the snowy Michigan landscape. Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde portray these characters as they head off in separate directions right before the holiday. An ex-convict, played by Charlie Hunnam, is also on the move, trying to evade capture in Detroit, and he encounters the girl while traveling toward his parents’ secluded farmhouse, where Kris Kristofferson and Sissy Spacek appear. Law enforcement officers are hot on their heels, with Treat Williams and Kate Mara filling those roles. The question becomes: who will make it through the holiday? “Deadfall,” released in 2012, is a crime thriller set against a winter backdrop, drawing comparisons to films such as “Fargo,” “A Simple Plan,” and “Wind River.” However, it doesn't quite measure up because of some forced plot developments and moments where the writing falls short. For example, the way the police chief interacts with his daughter—while certainly not unbelievable—could have been handled in a more effective manner. Despite these shortcomings, the film’s snowy scenery is impressive and maintains a sense of suspense throughout. There are also compelling dramatic elements reminiscent of neo-noir films, and the cast is undeniably talented, featuring Olivia Wilde who seems like she could use a good meal. The movie has a runtime of one hour and thirty-four minutes and was filmed in Quebec, near Montreal. GRADE: B-/B
