As someone from Scandinavia with a fondness for science fiction, fantasy, action, and horror films, I felt compelled to add Dead Snow to my collection. My son and I finally watched it last Saturday. Dead Snow is essentially a familiar story: a group of young people find themselves in trouble with supernatural forces. The film centers on teenagers who go hiking in the Norwegian mountains and camp out in a cabin—not exactly groundbreaking, but given that it’s a zombie horror movie, that's to be expected. What sets this movie apart somewhat is its restraint; it doesn't rely as heavily on excessive profanity or drug use as many Hollywood films do. The teenagers portrayed act reasonably normally, enjoying a few beers and having fun. That changes when a mysterious character appears—seemingly just to establish the atmosphere—and recounts a tale about a particularly brutal Nazi officer and his men. It’s pretty clear where things are headed from that point on. The movie then begins to follow a predictable formula for this type of film. Predictably, one of the teenagers needs to relieve themselves and wanders off alone. Following that is the expected scene involving two teenagers engaging in intimacy, taking place in an old-fashioned Scandinavian outhouse separate from the cabin. Anyone who’s ever used one of those (and I have—they really smell) knows you'd need to be quite aroused, intoxicated, or both to have sex in such a location. Consequently, that reduced the number of teenagers present. The zombies gradually become more numerous, and the severity of their predicament becomes increasingly apparent. As the zombie presence grows, so does the gore, eventually shifting the film’s tone more toward comedy than horror. I'd say Tommy Wirkola has much to teach his Hollywood peers regarding violence in horror films. Limbs—both external and internal—are flung about with abandon. And for most of the characters involved, that’s precisely what happens. Overall, this movie blended familiar horror elements with comedic moments, which I found quite enjoyable, though appreciation for it depends on your taste in movies.
