I’ve frequently considered the possibility of contests to judge people based on their internal qualities. David Cronenberg directed Dead Ringers, also co-adapting the screenplay alongside Norman Snider from Bari Wood and Jack Geasland's book "Twins." The film features Jeremy Irons and Genevieve Bujold, with a score by Howard Shore and cinematography by Peter Suschitzky. Identical twin gynecologists Beverly and Elliott Mantle (played by Irons) operate an exclusive fertility clinic. Despite their differing personalities, they are closely connected, but their lives begin to unravel when Beverly develops feelings for actress Claire Niveau (Bujold), who struggles with drug addiction. Drawing from the true story of gynaecologist twins Cyril and Steve Marcus—who both died by suicide due to drug abuse—Dead Ringers combines disturbing horror elements with a detached sense of humor; essentially, it provides Cronenberg an ideal setting to explore his particular interests. Cronenberg doesn’t rely on gore or sensationalism; instead, he uses the characters to create a clinical examination of their personalities. The film explores themes like individuality, identity, misogyny, narcissism, eroticism and addiction, all set against the backdrop of surgery and otherworldly concepts. The pacing remains consistently measured, creating an unsettling atmosphere until the final moments, when Cronenberg presents a powerful and emotionally impactful resolution. Supported by Irons’ remarkable double performance, along with Bujold's bold portrayal, Dead Ringers is a film of considerable merit, brimming with intelligent ideas. 8.5/10
