Following his friend’s sudden disappearance while en route to receive a Medal of Honour, "Rip" (Humphrey Bogart) sets out to discover what happened. Having been transported back from Germany and afforded special treatment, “Johnny” (William Prince)’s departure seemed inexplicable; however, he left behind some indications, and as "Rip" tries to make sense of them, he meets his friend’s girlfriend, "Dusty" (Lizabeth Scott). Examining old newspaper records, he discovers a shared past between his former comrade and this woman, leading them both to the casino run by the questionable "Martinelli" (Morris Carnovsky), where her actions become even more puzzling. Waking up in a drug-induced fog the following morning, he’s uncertain of who to believe or what's truly happening—though he is certain that she and her perfume are connected to the mystery and its resolution. The story unfolds through narration delivered to a priest in a church setting, which doesn't enhance the suspense much, and I must say Scott seemed like a less intense version of Lauren Bacall throughout. While the plot does have some twists and turns, despite Bogart’s gruff but appealing performance, the narrative feels somewhat underdeveloped, with an excess of dialogue and a lack of action until a final resolution that felt rather too neat for my taste. It's typical entertainment that occupies your time, but it isn't particularly striking or likely to stick in your memory.
