"Dead Poets Society" avoids softening the impact of sadness or loss by adhering to predictable storytelling patterns. Mr. Perry, Neil's father, doesn’t have a change of heart where he acknowledges his past mistakes and alters his rigid beliefs about what should happen in his son’s life; instead, he doubles down on his insistence that Neil follow his chosen path. Despite this disheartening conclusion surrounding Neil's death, the film revisits Keating’s initial message when several former students climb onto their desks as a show of resistance and a farewell to their leader. He has given them the ability to perceive life in a way unlike most people, which is fundamentally what education should achieve—the capacity for independent thought and reasoning, allowing one to form informed opinions across numerous areas.
