It's easy to understand why some people might feel like they’ve been taken advantage of by big corporations and banks, which makes it natural to want to get even with those who have acted deceptively. That sentiment was present in February 1977 when a disgruntled borrower planned a potentially lethal act of revenge against the head of an Indianapolis mortgage company, as depicted in this fact-based comedy-drama-thriller directed by Gus Van Sant. The story centers on Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård), who has a mental disability and felt betrayed financially by someone he trusted. He decided to retaliate against M.L. Hall (Al Pacino), the owner of the loan company. However, when Kiritsis went to meet with Mr. Hall, he discovered that the executive was unexpectedly away on a last-minute trip to Florida, which disrupted his plans for vengeance. With his original intention thwarted, Kiritsis took Hall’s son, Richard (Dacre Montgomery), hostage. To demonstrate his seriousness, Kiritsis secured his captive with a wire around his neck connected to a shotgun that would fire if there was any sudden movement. Despite his careful planning, the situation quickly turned into an unusual mix of serious crime and a comical spectacle that captivated the city for several days. Police officers, including Det. Michael Grable (Cary Elwes), who knew Kiritsis, found themselves constantly frustrated by how things unfolded, while many people in the community seemed to understand why the captor felt justified. The incident also brought about various side stories, like the ambitious efforts of a young television reporter (Myha’la) trying to get her big break and the improvised negotiations led by a popular local radio host (Colman Domingo), who was drawn into the situation by Kiritsis. Ultimately, it's a faithful recreation of an unusual event that feels like a classic example of American pop culture, reminiscent of films such as “Dog Day Afternoon” (1975) and “Breaking” (2022). Despite the film’s admirable attempt to recreate this largely forgotten incident, it sometimes seems overly eager to showcase its commitment to historical accuracy. Additionally, some parts of the story feel slow in the middle, making the 1 hour and 45-minute running time seem longer than necessary. Nevertheless, “Dead Man’s Wire” features excellent production design and strong performances from Domingo, Pacino, and particularly Skarsgård. The film is generally entertaining, offering a good amount of suspense and several genuinely funny moments. It serves as a cautionary tale for those who might try to deceive the public, suggesting that the consequences of financial manipulation could easily outweigh any potential gains.
