A sheriff finds himself perplexed by a series of brutal killings within an obscured Maine coastal community (James Farentino). Jack Albertson portrays the local mortician, while Robert Englund has a role as a mechanic before his iconic Freddy Krueger character. "Dead & Buried" (1981) offers a distinctive and unsettling horror experience that calls to mind other eerie films set in seaside locations, such as “The Fog” (1980), “Messiah of Evil” (1973), “The Birds” (1963) and “Humanoids from the Deep” (1980). The initial scenes include some unexpectedly refined music (which recurs during the closing credits), establishing a deliberate, somber investigation enhanced by innovative and genuinely disturbing effects created by Stan Winston. Lisa Blount is memorable among the female cast members, especially in her introductory scene. Melody Anderson also appears as the sheriff’s wife. Lisa Marie has a brief part as a hitchhiker (a different actress than the one known for her work with Tim Burton). The film would have benefited from developing these characters further (and I'm not suggesting anything inappropriate). The movie is 1 hour, 33 minutes long and was filmed in Mendocino, California (approximately 3.5 hours north of San Francisco along the coast), as well as at The Lot in West Hollywood. GRADE: B
