I only watched it a single time, and I’m hesitant to revisit it. It was inexplicably playing at a rundown cinema on Granville Street in Vancouver—a place known for attracting men who seemed lost—on a Sunday afternoon back in 1993. (It's worth noting that adult websites probably helped clean up the streets). Richard Linklater wasn't really well-known then; he was just the director of _Slackers_, someone I figured was like a mix of Jim Jarmusch and Chrissie Hynde. I had no idea he’d eventually become the person responsible for _Boyhood_. My friend and I went on impulse, and I left feeling euphoric, as if I were floating on something. I felt completely amazed; I wanted to constantly recommend it, but my friend didn't feel quite the same way. (Though later, at a Christmas gathering of oddballs, he kept playing the soundtrack). It could have been me, but this film captured exactly how I recalled high school in the seventies. Was I imagining things? Yes, I was often stoned, but that experience was perfectly portrayed. The only thing it needed was some Pink Floyd and more Led Zeppelin, as suggested by the title. _Dazed & Confused_ isn’t just the best movie about high school in the nineteen-seventies; it's the best movie about high school overall, and also a great film about the seventies, maybe even the best movie about growing up as a boy (that's my opinion, naturally). I worry about watching it again because what if I ruin those perfect memories and destroy my affection for it? Or was it the cinema itself that holds these nostalgic feelings? Something about it. I’ll probably have to watch it again soon, especially when Linklater finally gets all the awards and recognition he's waited so long for.
