This Truffaut film presents a challenge to describe briefly because so many elements are interwoven. The story centers on Jacqueline Bisset, playing "Julie," who travels to Nice to participate in a movie about a woman wedded to a Frenchman. Upon meeting his family, she develops feelings for his father and abandons her husband to be with him. As filming continues, the producer, “Bertrand” (Jean Champion), and the director, “Ferrand” (Truffaut himself), find themselves confronting numerous problems as the cast—confined to a small hotel—brings an extraordinary amount of personal drama. "Julie" is dealing with the aftermath of a broken marriage and a mental health crisis; "Séverine" (Valentina Cortese) is engaging in an affair, though with alcohol instead of a person; and Jean-Pierre Léaud delivers a memorable performance as the difficult “Alphonse.” The film brought to mind Fellini’s "8½," another look at movie production from a decade prior, although they are vastly different. The cast and crew here seem incredibly chaotic—a characteristic I associate with creative types—yet there's a possibility that the film will ultimately be completed! It provides amusement, and occasional appearances by Jean-Pierre Aumont help maintain momentum throughout this two-hour experience. Georges Delerue’s lively score enhances the production’s feeling of freedom, and I found it to be an enjoyable movie.
