'David Byrne’s American Utopia' feels like a film of pure joy, similar to how 'Stop Making Sense' inspires reverence – it’s the feeling of being present and alive, engaged in creation, finding common ground, holding onto hope, experiencing recovery, and coming together. This sense of elation is evident in every moment captured on stage, and also in the filmmaking itself, which at times feels grand and overwhelming. It would be even more remarkable to witness it firsthand within the Hudson Theatre, but even then, you might miss the unique quality this film possesses. Truly impactful art communicates directly with our humanity, assuring us that we are recognized and share a collective experience. 'David Byrne’s American Utopia' is an acknowledgment of all aspects of what defines us as people, and a vision for what America *could* represent. Experience it in a movie theater, and hope they play the audio at maximum volume. It ranks among the finest films released this year, and stands out as one of the very best concert films ever produced.
