The film centers on a program where imprisoned fathers are given the chance to dance with their daughters following counseling intended to explore the significance of their relationships. We meet Aubrey, a very eager young girl who is looking forward to seeing her father and who helps connect other mothers and children participating in this initiative – some more enthusiastic than others. The film then follows the preparations and build-up on both sides leading up to the afternoon when the daughters arrive for what are described as brief but emotional encounters. What struck me was the director's choice not to explain why these men were incarcerated. With sentences ranging from a few years to three decades, I found myself being drawn into feeling empathy for people about whom I knew very little. Because the men themselves didn’t seem willing to discuss the crimes that led to their imprisonment, I started questioning whether they were simply minor offenders or something much worse. It made me consider if perhaps these children would be better off without their fathers' involvement. The setting is a prison in Washington D.C., which provides occasional glimpses into African American family dynamics and perspectives, but it doesn’t delve deeply into the experiences of spouses dealing with raising children under challenging conditions. While the goal of forcing estranged fathers and daughters to reconnect is admirable, this documentary feels like an unfinished exploration of personalities. It might have been more effective as a longer television program, but as a film, it felt like a tiring experience.
