It’s an unexpectedly smart take on growing up, featuring Fionn O’Shea ("Eddie") and Lola Petticrew ("Amber") as two gay teenagers who devise a clever scheme to avoid unwanted attention from their peers: they pretend to be in a relationship. Their resourceful idea fools everyone around them and even sparks envy among some of his friends, while also providing them with a convenient facade. He finds himself attracted to a physically appealing teacher; she dreams of leaving for London to embrace a punk lifestyle. It's a heartwarming tale, showcasing pleasant performances from both actors as they navigate the challenges of living and potentially revealing their identities in a small Irish community unfamiliar with LGBTQ+ experiences during the mid-1990s. Since I’m not religious, I can’t comment on how accurately David Freyne portrays the church, but the Catholic nun's sex education video seems surprisingly believable (and prejudiced). The filmmaking is straightforward and uncomplicated. While there isn't a sense of harshness or intimidation, this might detract from its realism, although it certainly contributes to its appeal. It doesn’t present a raw depiction of sexual discovery; instead, it’s often humorous story about two young people figuring out their identities and aspirations, something many can relate to from that period in their lives.
