It’s been a while since I saw Darkman, but revisiting it recently reminded me of how much there is to appreciate. Compared to the current glut of superhero films, Darkman feels refreshing because it focuses on the fundamentals and delivers an exceptionally moving and engaging narrative that genuinely connects with viewers. There's no reliance on excessive computer-generated imagery, storylines dictated by studio executives, characters solely existing as plot devices, unnecessary quick shots referencing other works, or any obvious political messaging. Humor is employed thoughtfully, enhancing rather than detracting from the atmosphere of specific moments and personalities. I find myself longing for films like this in today's superhero movies. While I enjoy the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how they’ve brought those comic book characters to life, watching Darkman again after a long time highlights just how much the MCU gets wrong. It was wonderful to simply watch the movie without having to consider its significance to some larger narrative or where the story and character fit within an expansive universe. The film also excels at centering the experience around one individual and his difficult path through suffering. I truly love this movie; it's one of those films that will remain with me for a long time. It’s a genuine example of excellent filmmaking and understanding what makes a story work well.
