Sam Raimi's early work, preceding his Spider-Man films, proves to be quite entertaining. Liam Neeson portrays Dr. Peyton Westlake, an exceptionally intelligent scientist who, following a serious confrontation with the criminal Robert G. Durant (Larry Drake), transforms into Darkman, a sort of unconventional hero dedicated to eliminating L.A.’s organized crime element. This movie feels like a comic book adaptation even though it wasn’t directly derived from one; Raimi created his own troubled central figure while paying tribute to similar characters from earlier times. The typical elements associated with this genre are present, including exaggerated violence and vibrant personalities, but there's considerable depth to the concept of revenge, and the action scenes frequently stand out. The film maintains a brisk tempo as Raimi’s characters navigate a Los Angeles that is both rundown and prosperous, and Neeson brings a compelling combination of confidence, vulnerability, and emotional power to his role. 7/10
