Bette Davis had a knack for portraying characters who were entitled young women, and she certainly delivers that here with considerable flair. She takes on the role of "Judy," a woman enjoying a life of ease until she begins experiencing headaches and bouts of dizziness. Her family physician suggests consulting with “Dr. Steele” (George Brent), who informs her that she has a brain tumor. Surgery follows, seemingly providing a cure, after which Judy and “Steele” develop feelings for each other. However, Judy’s closest friend and her friend's boyfriend are aware that her condition is far more serious—a revelation that deeply affects her. A particular scene set at a dinner table effectively conveys this with both skill and intensity! It’s understandable that "Judy" then begins to spiral – she turns to alcohol and male companionship as ways of avoiding the inevitable, but perhaps her friends can step in and show her there might be a more positive way to spend the time she has left. This is an engaging drama filled with emotion and a strong connection between Davis, who’s at the top of her game, and Brent, whose performance is subtle yet impactful. The script offers some powerful lines, and Edmund Goulding establishes a framework that allows both performers to truly take ownership of the film. It's unusual to say Humphrey Bogart didn’t leave much of a mark on a movie, but in this instance, he serves as more of an accessory—and his character, “Michael,” is well-played too. Max Steiner provides a dramatic score, and overall, it’s a skillfully constructed story that deserves viewing.
