It felt like a film that had been anticipated for quite some time, even though it came out only four years ago. People suggested I should see it, but they also cautioned me that it followed familiar horror tropes with just a minor alteration to the plot. Given how poorly horror films generally perform in my movie library, I didn’t expect much beyond an average experience. Perhaps that's why I ended up enjoying it. It adheres to a recognizable formula for horror movies, even if it isn’t as terrible as some people claim. The only real problem is the opening quote essentially spoils the central plot development. And the final reveal wasn’t really surprising if you already knew what was coming. The story centers on a family dealing with financial difficulties who have recently begun experiencing odd occurrences in their home. When things escalate, they must find a way to resolve the situation, or risk losing everything. After gaining some understanding of what's happening, they consult an expert and receive helpful information. Then their attempt at fighting back begins; the challenge ahead will determine the family’s fate. The rest of the movie shows us how their plan unfolds and what ultimately happens to them. JK Simmons played a role that felt very familiar—a common typecasting in horror films. I wasn't thrilled about that, but I did appreciate his presence in the film. It seems there’s also the possibility of a sequel, given the unresolved ending. The trope of people around a struggling family failing to recognize what’s happening is predictable, which isn’t unusual for horror movies; it’s uncommon to find something truly different within this genre. Still, it was an acceptable film if you're looking for straightforward entertainment rather than something groundbreaking—though there's no guarantee that kind of entertainment will be provided. It’s generally a pleasant moviegoing experience. Despite its familiarity, most people should have a good time watching it. _7/10_
