I’m setting aside any preconceived notions for this one. I really enjoyed Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Batman; however, I didn’t care for Batman Returns, Alice in Wonderland, or Willy Wonka. Nightmare Before Christmas and Sweeney Todd just didn't do anything for me. So, it's safe to say I don't dislike Tim Burton entirely, nor am I a devoted fan either. I feel like my perspective is probably similar to what most moviegoers have—no particular bias, no strong feelings one way or the other. And with that in mind, this film just isn’t good. It seems like Burton put so much energy into making it visually dark and stylized, filling it with familiar actors even when their roles seemed unnecessary; he lost sight of the fact that he was actually creating a movie. The premise is simple and potentially enjoyable, but ego and an obsession with visual flair prevented the story from cohering. It’s as if they were trying to shout, “Look how quirky we are!”—and in doing so, undermined Depp's performance and the film's potential. It would be nice if he could just mature a bit. So much skill is being squandered on movies that all look, feel, and cast the same people. I hope they’d use that talent to create something new! Just try pushing yourself a little beyond your usual aesthetic. This movie dragged on forever, was dull, and ultimately fell apart. All of the amusing moments were in the advertising. And by the way, wasn't this supposed to be set in the 1970s? Aside from a few trees and one hippie van, it looked just like the sets for Sweeney Todd. The entire film felt like it took place in London during the nineteen-forties. That’s simply poor filmmaking, regardless of who is directing.
