Wuchak on Dark Angel: The Ascent

9/10 · Feb 17, 2023

It’s comic book-inspired, certainly, but surprisingly, it manages to be a remarkable achievement. The story centers on an angel banished to the Underworld who longs for freedom and a physical existence above ground. She emerges from Bucharest's sewers, where she encounters a kind doctor and witnesses humanity’s flaws directly. "Dark Angel: The Ascent” (1994) blends fantasy and horror, drawing inspiration from the initial two "Terminator" films (1984/1991), the atmosphere of “Subspecies” (1991), and the premise behind Marvel Comics’ Son of Satan. However, don't anticipate extensive action; with a budget of only $350,000, the emphasis is on inventive concepts and strong dialogue. Angela Featherstone, with her red hair, delivers a solid performance as the protagonist, portraying someone out of place in her surroundings. Some viewers might recall her from “The Maid,” a ninth-season episode of Seinfeld where she played Jerry’s housekeeper. Daniel Markel also does well embodying the role of the virtuous doctor. Although presented as a fantasy with elements reminiscent of comic books, and therefore not bound by strict theological accuracy, the film offers numerous insights and even some original ideas. Despite its limited resources, it transcends its origins to achieve spiritual depth; it’s both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour, 24 minutes, and similar to “Subspecies,” was filmed entirely in Romania (Bucharest, Berca and Floresti). GRADE: A
