Georges Danton (played by Gérard Depardieu) comes back from living in the countryside after the French Revolution to find Paris now ruled by committees just as oppressive as the monarchy used to be. He wants to stir people up and get them fighting this new kind of control, but that puts him at odds with his sick friend Robespierre (Wojciech Pszoniak), who’s trying to prevent the revolution from collapsing and, for a while anyway, keep Danton alive. As things start to heat up, and with people plotting everywhere, Robespierre realizes he can only be certain of Danton's loyalty by getting him out of the way. That won't be simple, though; he has supporters and also influences a population that’s increasingly unhappy, so it will take some skillful maneuvering if he wants to succeed without causing even bigger problems for himself—or possibly ending up in trouble too. The film is visually appealing, with lots of care given to the details. It's also an insightful look at how empty speeches can be when you're shouting into nothing or talking about big ideas while people are struggling to find food for their families. There’s a clear demonstration of survival of the fittest—or, more accurately, the most deceptive—and it shows that when power is in the hands of the mob, other mobs will inevitably try to take over. A bonus here is that, as a biographical film, Andrzej Wajda has considerable freedom; reliable accounts of what happened and who did what are scarce, so he can really let his imagination run wild while telling a story about betrayal, dishonesty, and staying alive. Depardieu gives powerful performances in his big speeches and ultimately provides a believable portrayal of the downfall of an honorable man trapped in a swamp of intellectual corruption.
