This film shares some echoes of “Jaws” from 1975. The story unfolds in a small town that relies on tourism, where geologist “Harry” (played by Pierce Brosnan) detects unsettling signs from nature. When he gathers the locals, their primary worry becomes how any negative news might affect their businesses. The mayor (Linda Hamilton) seems reluctant to leave office, and her boss “Paul” (Charles Hallahan) attempts to minimize the situation, suggesting everything is contained – or suppressed. However, things escalate when they sample the tap water and realize this mountainside community is about to face a dangerous crisis—quite literally turning red! Will he be able to save everyone, including the mayor, her children, and the expected lost animal? The director, Roger Donaldson, doesn’t prioritize suspense, so the storyline feels fairly straightforward. There are some reasonably good visual effects toward the end, along with a touch of scientific explanation about how volcanoes behave independently, regardless of any monitoring equipment people install. They refer to it as the pyroclast protocol—something the residents of Pompeii should have known. Brosnan isn’t portrayed as an action hero, but he does adequately handle his role alongside Hamilton, whose acting feels stiff at times. There are enough mild scares suitable for a family audience to keep the movie engaging for close to its nearly two-hour length, about how long it takes me to cook chicken in the oven. It's something you can watch; however, it’s also likely to be quickly forgotten.
