Dylan (Scott Eastwood), returning to his family’s isolated island home after his brother Shaun passes away, finds himself far from embraced. As he prepares to leave, the sheriff (Tyrese Gibson) identifies him and takes him into custody. Their predicament is quickly overshadowed by the arrival of mercenaries under the command of Cole (Kevin Durand), who eliminate law enforcement and seize control of the family. The question becomes: what are these intruders seeking in such an unusual location? It doesn’t take long to discover that Dylan possesses considerable ninja abilities, which he uses to systematically reduce the number of attackers while collaborating with the spirited Linda (Brenda Bazinet) and his intoxicated psychologist, Alderwood (Mel Gibson), via phone. Together, they attempt to uncover what the mercenaries are using ground radar to find. While it’s not the worst action film I've seen today, there were moments when Eastwood’s performance strikingly resembled his father’s; however, a pervasive sense of predictability undermines any enjoyment, and this isn’t helped by the unremarkable acting, writing, or a villain who fails to inspire fear (I briefly hoped for Neal McDonough instead). Gibson’s infrequent appearances provide some amusement, but Famke Janssen's role is minimal. Ultimately, the film evoked comparisons to "Bear Island" (1979), though lacking any real danger or snow.
