The film itself isn’t particularly remarkable, owing to its straightforward direction, largely unfamiliar cast—with the exception of the lead actress—and a predictable storyline. However, Michelle Pfeiffer delivers a notably compelling performance here. Although her portrayal of a former Marine doesn't feel entirely authentic, she manages to be more convincing than Demi Moore did in a similar role later on, and she comes across as genuinely caring when playing the part of an instructor. It’s surprising to see Simpson and Bruckheimer involved with this project; it was a time, following her breakthrough performance in 'Batman Returns' as Catwoman, when Pfeiffer was still receiving significant leading roles (I am very eager to see her work alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in ‘The Age of Innocence’). While I will always consider ‘Scarface’ to be my favorite of her films, this one is definitely among the best—she gives a truly excellent performance. It's disappointing that they only seemed to want one type of character from her; if she had been given a more complex role (such as romantic or familial relationships—I understand there was a potential love scene with Andy Garcia that ended up being cut so they could concentrate on her relationship with the students), it would have been even more engaging.
