I recently watched Damsel. Damsel is a Netflix film that came out just a few days ago. It features Millie Bobby Brown, Robin Wright, Angela Bassett, and Shohreh Aghdashloo (voicing a character) in the story of Elodie. I won't detail what happens, but I suspect most viewers will anticipate where things are headed. I have complicated thoughts about it. The narrative isn’t original; many familiar elements appear in this type of film. Some choices made by the characters (even the dragon’s) seem questionable, and our main character experiences a lot of fortunate events that move the story along. The special effects vary from not very good to quite acceptable, with the weaker visuals appearing early on when showing large landscapes and castles, but improving noticeably when the dragon appears. I was watching on a smaller screen, and Netflix's video quality has been disappointing lately, so keep my comments about the visuals in perspective. Regarding the dragon specifically, it presents an unusual take. Often we don’t actually see it, only hearing Shohreh Aghdashloo’s distinctive voice bringing it to life. And when we do see the dragon, there's a slightly unsettling quality; it combines familiar majestic imagery with something darker and more viscous—a muskrat came to mind. I appreciated that aspect somewhat. Concerning the title: It's clearly referencing “damsel in distress,” and Elodie does fight rather than needing rescue, but she screams frequently and genuinely seems distressed for a good portion of the movie. Then, abruptly, she transforms into the hero and battles the dragon on her own. That feels excessive and difficult to accept. Honestly, this is an average film. It’s not awful, nor is it exceptional. If you're looking for visuals—gold, jewels, dragons, princesses, and some swordplay—then give it a try. There are certainly worse ways to spend around 109 minutes, but also better ones.
