While not measuring up to Richard Donner's excellent initial offering, this installment remains watchable. It doesn’t capture the distinctive feeling of dread and foreboding that comes with the possibility of your own child being connected to evil, and the building tension isn't quite as tight or expertly managed. However, there are some memorable sequences depicting deaths, and it’s not nearly as poor as horror enthusiasts claim. My fondness for movies centered on religious themes might make me a little easier on it than others would be; I could easily say that evil influenced my judgment, or at least its offspring did. Jerry Goldsmith contributes another noteworthy score, though this one didn't earn the two Academy Award nominations and win he received previously. William Holden and Lee Grant are believable in their roles, taking over from Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, who were eliminated by Damien in the first movie. The initial film is a must-see for everyone, whereas these subsequent chapters offer acceptable entertainment to those interested in modern horror or religious thrillers—that is, films made since 1970.
