Jeremy Irons portrays a contented British government official with a wife, Miranda Richardson. He encounters his son’s current girlfriend, played by Juliette Binoche, and they develop an instant connection that quickly escalates into something more significant. The narrative follows their secret relationship as they navigate the dangers and excitement it brings, culminating in what felt like a rather disappointing resolution. While this represents one of Irons' stronger performances amidst his often stiff portrayals, Rupert Graves retains the hairstyle reminiscent of his role in "Maurice" from 1987, and Binoche is effective as the alluring seductress. However, the story feels slow-moving and mechanical. The film boasts a visually appealing aesthetic, but its pacing is overly structured. Aside from Richardson’s sadly underdeveloped character, the other individuals presented fail to evoke any particular sympathy or warmth. Even the intimate moments feel devoid of genuine connection or passion; for me, it felt like a straightforward, predictable sequence of events.
