It’s clear why Preminger paired with Joan Crawford, whose performances I greatly appreciate, as he handled the melodramatic elements reasonably well, even if not spectacularly. The romantic rivalry at its center works effectively, and I found myself hoping for Henry Fonda to win out, despite the fact that most women would likely choose Dana Andrews instead. This film was part of a 10-DVD collection featuring Henry Fonda, which is a worthwhile purchase. While I don’t consider him one of my favorites, he has been in several excellent movies and built up an impressive filmography over time. Preminger and Crawford consistently deliver quality performances together, and they live up to that standard here in this early project of his.
