Jervis, portrayed by Fred Astaire, hails from an established American millionaire family. While traveling in France with his resourceful assistant, Griggs (Fred Clark), he encounters Julie, a captivating young woman who works with children and possesses a remarkable energy. Jervis decides to support her education at a college he practically controls in New England. Julie is pleased by this opportunity, though she remains unaware of the identity of the person helping her. She expresses her gratitude through letters that Griggs keeps for himself instead of passing along. The situation grows more involved when Julie becomes impatient with the lack of replies and when romantic feelings develop between two people. "Something's Gotta Give" is a prominent song in the film, alongside other energetic and skillfully choreographed musical numbers featuring the two leads who have excellent chemistry together. Fred Clark particularly shines, his grumpy but clever character enhanced by Thelma Ritter’s appearances as Alicia. While it admittedly takes quite some time to get started—and feels rather lengthy overall—the interaction between the characters is pleasant enough to maintain a sense of amusement throughout this gently unfolding romance that shares similarities with "Cinderella."
