A group of veteran Black soldiers embark on a mission back to Vietnam, aiming to recover the remains of a fallen comrade and a substantial amount of gold—approximately $17 million in bars. Along their journey, they confront past relationships and encounter local inhabitants with agendas of their own. While not entirely unpleasant, it falls far short of what one might expect from Spike Lee at his peak. The characters do display a feeling of connection and dedication to each other, but this is presented in a way that makes the film feel like a typical action movie reminiscent of Nicolas Cage’s work. It possesses a predictable structure and a narrative that seems largely unconcerned with the native people. At two and a half hours, the runtime feels excessive. The visuals are impressive, however, but ultimately I found it disappointing.
