The opening lines, “I was to report a murder"... “Whose?”..."Mine!" immediately establish the unsettling nature of this shadowy, deliberately slow-moving suspense film concerning a man grappling with the realization that he’s been intentionally poisoned with a strange substance and is facing an uncertain lifespan. He's baffled as to why anyone would target him and begins searching for those responsible. A significant portion of the narrative unfolds through his account given to a skeptical group of police officers while near death, and it’s skillfully handled by Rudolph Maté, featuring numerous unexpected developments in the storyline; the music steadily increases the suspense, and there are several possible suspects introduced along the way. Pamela Britton portrays his girlfriend, "Paula," with a memorable intensity that would likely test anyone's patience, and the rest of the performers, notably Neville Brand as “Chester,” maintain audience engagement until the very end.
