It’s easy to imagine José Ferrer delivering a performance that would mark the high point of his career, and this feels like precisely that moment. He fully embodies the character of the celebrated poet, whose wit extended beyond his writing to include skill with a blade. His companion, "Christian" (William Prince), is captivated by the beautiful "Roxane" (Mala Powers), as is the protagonist – but he generously tries to arrange things so they can be together, communicating feelings he lacks the nerve to express directly. The film itself is well-made and robust, a swashbuckling adventure with excellent dialogue drawn from Edmond Rostand's play and adapted by Carl Foreman, featuring considerable action sequences. Even the romantic elements, which I don’t usually enjoy, are handled skillfully, avoiding any trace of sentimentality. Perhaps it runs on a bit too long, and certain scenes feel constrained by their theatrical origins, slightly limiting the film’s scope, but overall it remains an enjoyable cinematic experience.
