The filmmakers seemed to have good goals in mind, but the final product is deeply flawed. I want to acknowledge that I think the creators had positive intentions. Given that young viewers are likely encountering similar subject matter, it’s important for people—especially parents—to be informed about what's being presented. However, *Cuties* approaches this topic in a misguided manner. The film’s message, which eventually comes across, is against the exploitation of children; yet, the movie itself engages in that very behavior. Certain scenes and camera perspectives simply shouldn't exist or be shown. Some shots were unnecessary. More should have been left for the audience to interpret on their own, rather than having it shoved in our faces, which ironically replicates what the film is criticizing. For instance, pulling back the camera during certain moments or focusing closely on the characters’ eyes when they are being sexualized would have been a better choice. I will say that I appreciated Fathia Youssouf's performance as Amy; there were times when I felt genuine emotion from her. The other cast members didn't particularly stand out, but none of them gave noticeably poor performances either. I’ve put a lot of thought into how to write this review, more than usual, because it’s somewhat complicated—as I mentioned, the intentions seemed good. Unfortunately, in my view, the film ends up demonstrating what it claims to be against. There are strong opinions surrounding this movie, some of which I don't agree with. Ultimately, though, it isn’t a worthwhile viewing experience, even if you only consider its quality as a film.
