Reno on Cut Bank

6/10 · Dec 14, 2016

The film’s setting—a town named in the title—is far removed from financial dealings or Wall Street stories. It's a thriller centered on Dwayne, a young man who inadvertently recorded a mailman’s murder with his girlfriend. After this incident, additional killings occur, and when he realizes the killer is targeting him, the film attempts to explain the motive behind everything. Simultaneously, the local sheriff increases scrutiny of the situation, as such violent crimes are unprecedented in his jurisdiction. The premise itself held promise, but some aspects of the plot or the explanations for events left me feeling that it was a bit foolish. While people certainly act on questionable motivations, I didn't find the film entirely believable regarding those reasons. The scenery and performances were commendable, though; Hemsworth, Malkovich, Dern, Palmer, and especially Stuhlbarg stood out. The storytelling adopted a detached perspective, presenting events from multiple characters’ viewpoints. Directed by someone with primarily television experience, it could have been stronger, but it's acceptable for casual viewing. It’s an uneven thriller—watch it if you want simple entertainment rather than expecting something profound. _6/10_
