Shawn Christensen's “Richie” opens with a stark image: Richie himself, submerged in water colored red, contemplating self-harm. A phone call interrupts his despair; his sister unexpectedly asks him to babysit her daughter. The awkwardness of their reunion is immediately apparent—she seems relieved to have found someone willing to watch the girl, but not enthusiastic about it. He accepts and takes her to a bowling alley, where they mostly sit in silence while she plays video games and he smokes. Through conversation, she reveals an unexpected maturity, unafraid of his adult struggles and seemingly more mature than he is. Richie faces a decision: ignore the girl until her mother returns or connect with her. One path requires no effort, the other holds potential for something significant. His life feels hollow, though the reasons behind this emptiness and the rift between him and his sister remain unexamined. The young girl might offer a way to bridge the gap between them, suggesting that past actions don't have to dictate future possibilities and that isolation can be deeply damaging. Fatima Ptacek truly shines in her role, although Christensen also performs well, managing to convey a lot within the film’s twenty-minute runtime.
