This feels like one of the earliest examples of what we now call a docudrama. It incorporates interviews with people who were there—or at least, actors portraying those individuals—in a documentary style, which makes sense given that the actual events occurred centuries ago. I suspect this film carries more weight for audiences in Britain and Scotland than it does for someone like me, an admirer of British culture; it depicts the last battle fought on their land and marks the end of the clan rebellion led by the much-discussed Bonnie Prince Charlie. The movie implies that the Scottish plan was seriously misguided, to the point where even the Prince’s own military advisors were perplexed. This resulted not just in a loss but also in what seems like a slaughter, with 1200 Scots dying against only 50 British soldiers. Beyond the battle itself, the film touches on the subsequent pursuit and killing of prominent clan members and their families, resulting in acts of rape and murder that are difficult to comprehend. Despite being over 50 years old and depicting a comparatively small event in global history, Culloden has held up reasonably well and still manages to be engaging.
