Tilman Singer's Cuckoo proved to be somewhat uneven. I wasn’t particularly fond of it, though I wouldn’t say I strongly disliked it either. The film begins with a deliberate, unsettling rhythm set in a remote location, and initially, there was an expectation that something significant would unfold. I found myself anticipating the point where everything would come together brilliantly, but that moment never arrived. The narrative felt adrift, as if struggling to find direction, which ultimately dampened my enjoyment of it. It became irritating because while the visuals are well-crafted and the production values are high, the storyline itself is simply a jumble. Hunter Schafer’s portrayal of “Gretchen” didn't make much of an impact. I am aware that they are capable as an actor; their work in Euphoria demonstrates that, but here, Gretchen came across as detached and lacking substance, without any discernible emotion or complexity. It was like the character existed on screen, yet there was nothing to engage with. Ultimately, Cuckoo possessed certain appealing aspects, but failed to coalesce them into a satisfying whole. It’s one of those films that leaves you feeling disappointed because it hints at what could have been — it simply didn't fulfill its promise.
