Dan Stevens’ performance in "I'm Your Man" (2021) seemed intended to prepare him for this underwhelming mystery film. He portrays an owner of a large resort nestled within the Bavarian countryside, which becomes a destination for Hunter Schafer’s character, “Gretchen,” and her family. Gretchen’s father, “Luis” (Martin Csokas), is tasked with planning a new development for "Herr König," who generously provides the young woman with employment at his hotel. After a remarkably uneventful shift one evening, while cycling home, she finds herself being followed by an unknown woman distinguished by strikingly bright red eyes. She manages to find safety within the local hospital, but predictably, no one takes her incredible story seriously. Simultaneously, her speechless step-sister "Alma" (Mila Lieu) is dealing with disturbing and unexplainable experiences, also ending up at the same medical facility. It’s reasonable to wonder if these events are related; what role does their mysterious host play in all of this, and what exactly is the purpose behind the seemingly affable former police officer "Henry" (Jan Bluthardt)? Director Tilman Singer attempts to craft something unusual with this film, but unfortunately, the generally poor acting significantly diminishes any potential for the plot's unique elements to shine. The script contains an excess of pointless conversations, unsettling family dynamics, and a tempo that, presumably meant to generate suspense, instead cultivates boredom and a sense of predictability as the "cuckoo" concept is inadequately developed and the ending feels hurried. It’s diverting enough to watch, but I doubt it will stick with me for long.
