I wasn’t entirely won over by the straightforward, somewhat uninspired animation style used throughout the movie, but I did find myself appreciating the stories about mythological creatures—the "Cryptids"—that form its core. These are beings like unicorns and yeti; animals rejected by scientific understanding yet inspiring artistic expression. As you might expect, these creatures are persistently hunted, which leads “Lauren” and “Joan” to devise a plan: to locate a secure habitat for them, allowing scientists to study them peacefully and perhaps even gain knowledge from them. The one they haven't found is the rare "Baku," an entity capable of consuming dreams, making it a target for those who, predictably, want to harness its abilities for military applications. Will they be able to find this creature and protect it from their powerful and ruthless pursuers? It’s only through encountering numerous typically gentle beings that they begin to question whether these often lovely and spirited creatures ought to remain concealed from humanity as they have been for centuries. Although the story unfolds in a fantasy setting, it prompts some reflection on the value of scientific progress when pursued without regard for the well-being or inherent worth of the subjects involved. There's considerable imagination at work here, with director Dash Shaw blending stories of culture, religion, and adventure into an engaging mix of animated creations that showcase inventive storytelling.
