I went into _Croupier_ expecting a lot; it's a stylish British movie taking place in London during a period I remember fondly, a city that feels lost now. And honestly, the story is initially engaging and has some clever ideas. There’s a smooth, noir atmosphere that’s pleasant to experience, and Clive Owen certainly embodies the role visually. However, while there are issues with the writing, it's really the directing that disappoints. The movie moves too slowly, and everything feels distant and impersonal, which makes it difficult to feel anything for the people involved. It maintains a distance from the viewer, lessening any sense of suspense or emotional impact. Owen seems constrained, and it’s not entirely his responsibility. He's more interesting as the voiceover than when he’s actually on screen. Considering its supposed themes of danger, longing, and ethical dilemmas, the film is surprisingly lacking in allure. The women feel underdeveloped, largely existing to look upset, withdrawn, or exposed. A sequence at a party in Oxfordshire perfectly illustrates these problems—it's unnecessary, doesn’t fit with the overall tone, and it would be best if it were never brought up again. It’s a complete throwback to the late 1990s aesthetically, which is either a positive or negative depending on your perspective, and I hope Owen’s hat, along with some of the film's other dated elements, remain firmly in that era.
