The film *Croupier* manages to hold one’s attention. Jack Manfred finds himself working as a card dealer at a London casino because of his father, who has arranged it. He begins writing about his experiences in this shadowy environment, finding material for stories there. However, while the situation provides him with narrative fodder, his own life is rapidly falling apart. *Croupier* is recognized primarily for two things beyond its merits as a film. It was instrumental in propelling Clive Owen to greater prominence, establishing him as a Hollywood presence. Additionally, it initially received little attention when first released in Britain, but after gaining popularity in America, the movie and Owen experienced renewed success. Despite not entirely earning the label of “sleeper hit” that has been applied to it, *Croupier* is an effective thriller centered in London’s late-night casino scene. The cast features compelling characters, thanks to the collaboration between Hodges and writer Paul Mayersburg, who crafted a sense of unsettling mystery. There's perhaps too many plot twists toward the end, but generally the film maintains viewer interest throughout its ninety-minute length. It earns a rating of 7/10.
