The investigation into a brutal killing becomes the responsibility of police captain "Finlay" (Robert Young). Suspicion quickly lands on a group of former military personnel who had been socializing with the victim and his girlfriend (Marlo Dwyer) before his death. Simultaneously, "Kelley" (Robert Mitchum), concerned about his friends' potential involvement with law enforcement, begins his own inquiry to exonerate them, discover the killer’s identity, and uncover a reason for the crime. The film moves along at a brisk speed and features a fairly complex storyline. Young and Mitchum deliver strong performances, as do Robert Ryan in the role of "Monty" and George Cooper as "Mitch." Several layers exist within the narrative to maintain engagement—particularly issues like homosexuality and anti-Semitism, which were sensitive subjects under the production “Code” at that time. While it might be a little verbose, it remains a powerful mystery that bravely addresses controversial themes alongside more commonplace human weaknesses. Gloria Grahame provides a noteworthy performance, and the film’s dark, realistic cinematography is also commendable. It's an excellent, tightly controlled movie that manages to keep viewers engaged.
