"Crossfire Trail," a Western from 2001 directed by Simon Wincer, features Tom Selleck portraying Rafe Covington, a quiet man who journeys to Wyoming following a request made by a friend on his deathbed—to care for the friend’s widow (Virginia Madsen) and their ranch. There's just one complication: a scheming businessman from the nearby town (Mark Harmon) also has designs on them. Though produced for TNT, this film holds its own against many theatrical Westerns like "The War Wagon" or "Open Range," proving to be more enjoyable than most of the quirky Italian-style Westerns. Madsen delivers a strong performance as the woman in distress, and Kyla Wise is charming as a local barmaid. Selleck is appealing as the heroic lead character, surrounded by a group of agreeable companions including Wilford Brimley, Christian Kane, and David O'Hara. The narrative unfortunately falters somewhat during its final portion, specifically with a predictable showdown in town between good guys and bad guys. The action sequence itself is well-handled and powerful, but it feels underwhelming and reveals the film’s television origins. Still, this is a decent contemporary Western, with Harmon standing out as the deceitful villain. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 32 minutes and was filmed at CL Ranch in Calgary, Alberta.
