I stumbled upon this film on television early in the year, deciding to watch it because it’s based on an Agatha Christie novel. While I wouldn’t claim to be an expert on her work—I enjoy her books and have read several—I won't comment on how well this adaptation captures the source material; there are others better suited for that task. However, compared to other adaptations of her stories, it doesn't rank among the worst, as it appears to strive to recreate the setting and time period while delivering suspense and surprises. Those hoping for appearances by Poirot or Miss Marple should be aware they aren’t present in this particular story. The film is quite enjoyable, even better than some of the larger productions we often see. It holds the audience's attention, especially if you pay close attention to the plot, which is full of unexpected developments. The direction wasn’t particularly strong; I don't believe Paquet-Brenner managed to draw out the best performances from the actors. More time spent getting acquainted with each member of the family would likely have been beneficial. Some characters feel underdeveloped, and it seems unlikely that Christie didn’t provide more material for their growth. The editing also has issues; the pacing is inconsistent, and the suspense fluctuates rather than building steadily toward a peak. Where the production shines is in its well-executed cinematography, careful selection of locations, and design of sets and costumes. Regarding the cast, I think some casting choices were problematic. Max Irons doesn’t seem comfortable with the material and lacks chemistry with Stefanie Martini, who plays his romantic interest. Their scenes together, particularly those needing a stronger connection between them, feel awkward. Gillian Anderson, Terence Stamp, Christian McKay, and Julian Sands all deliver solid performances, but their characters deserved more development and screen time, as I mentioned earlier. Glenn Close is excellent in her role, consistently strong, while young Honor Kneafsey demonstrates talent and dedication in one of the most compelling child roles I’ve seen recently.
