Even though its reputation has faded over the years, this film remains an important work that helped launch a revival in Australian filmmaking. Despite relying on some tired stereotypes, the story follows an American reporter named “Sue” (Linda Kozlowski) who travels to meet a well-known Australian crocodile hunter (Paul Hogan). Expecting him to be unsophisticated, she discovers he’s more than happy to play into that image, with help from his friend "Walter" (John Meillon, who often steals the spotlight) and enjoys making her feel intellectually superior. As events unfold, she starts to see there's more to him than she initially thought, and when she persuades him to accompany her to New York, their connection develops along a familiar but still enjoyable path. I noticed that the humor worked best in its simplest moments, and Hogan’s natural charisma shines through—whether he’s demonstrating what constitutes a real knife or greeting someone on a street as if they're destined to share a beer later. It isn’t particularly subtle, but it uses misunderstandings arising from cultural differences – despite sharing the same language – to satirize some of the condescending attitudes held by certain Americans toward those they consider less educated. It’s unlikely something like this would be produced today, and perhaps my appreciation is colored by nostalgia, but I genuinely found it entertaining.
