A reporter named Sue Charlton learns about a man in rural Australia who survived an encounter with a crocodile. To investigate, she connects with "Crocodile Mick Dundee" and accompanies him into the wilderness. They develop a connection during their time together, and Sue persuades Mick to travel back with her to New York City. This leads to some amusing situations as Mick handles the challenges of urban life in the same way he would handle the Australian outback. The film’s basic story—a fish-out-of-water comedy—is fairly predictable, but it contains several genuinely funny moments and benefits from Paul Hogan's engaging portrayal of Dundee. It became a huge success that audiences embraced enthusiastically. Some might suggest that the era in which it was released wasn’t exactly known for its great films, and perhaps moviegoers were simply looking for something to lift their spirits. That may be true; however, Crocodile Dundee is certainly an example of escapist entertainment. But I don't think acknowledging this does it justice because, despite a somewhat flimsy idea and the obviousness of where things are headed, it possesses a great deal of down-to-earth appeal that many people can relate to. As Mick navigates his new surroundings and encounters various characters—pimps, transsexuals, muggers—these scenes are not only humorous but also offer glimpses into the evolving nature of modern society. The film does come close to becoming a sentimental romantic comedy at times, but Linda Kozlowski delivers a solid performance as Sue, and Hogan introduces an unforgettable character to 1980s cinema. The romance in the story is easy to root for and hope will succeed. Two sequels were made afterward; the first was essentially a reversal of the original plot and barely acceptable, while the second, released after a thirteen-year absence, proved disappointing and demonstrated that the concept had run its course. Crocodile Dundee from 1986 remains an enjoyable piece of escapist cinema. It’s a pleasant film to return to every couple of years because it's straightforward, comforting, and very funny. 8/10
